Workshop in Bolivia on “Trade and Labor Market Informality”

On July 3, 2015, the Fond National Suisse, Université de Genève, the School of Economics at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés and CIESS-Econométrica collaborated to host a workshop on “Informal Work and Trade” La Paz, Bolivia. The all-day event brought together 47 particiipants, including five former ministers of state, two former presidents of the Central Bank, vice-ministers, the Swiss Ambassador to Bolivia, researchers, university professors together, and the university’s elected representatives.

Meeting with Ms. Sandra Polaski (Deputy Director-General for Policy) and Mr David Cheong (Chief Technical Adviser). During the meeting it was discussed which questions related to trade and labor were of most concern for the ILO’s member countries as well as the approaches the ILO has taken to address these questions. Ms Polaski agreed to participate in the Policy Advisory and Advocacy Group of the research program. The research program offered technical assistance in the implementation of the “Effects of Trade on Employment (ETE) Project”. A joint policy workshop was agreed for September 2015.

The “Trade and Labor Market Outcomes in Development Countries” jointly with the r4d project “Employment Effects of Different Development Policy Instruments” invited (invitation letter) delegates from Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa and Vietnam, as well as ILO representatives to participate in an informative session on the r4d module “Employment in the context of sustainable development”. A flyer (Flyer Project) of the project was distributed among the participants in the event. The African Center for Economic Transformation followed up with the Ghanaian delegates who participated in the meeting.
